Low Energy House, Hunton Down

Stephen and Anne Mullins said we are about to purchase one of a pair of semi-detached farm worker cottages. We then want to demolish it and build a sustainable, very low energy house, on a hill in the Hampshire Countryside.

We really like what you do - can you help? - to which our response was “Go on then”.

This scheme was in the very difficult - if not impossible - box, but the proposal developed and planning permission was achieved and the ‘Sustainable Barn House’ is now finished.

The original notion was to erect a standard Agricultural Steel Dutch barn as a working shelter and then build within its protection, with a very low energy and sustainable intent.

The demands of super insulation and significant performance have evolved a crisper expression but the energy reclamation and systems employed mitigate against what is a very exposed site.

Steve and Anne say their bills are less than a bottle of wine each week.
